PMG

VALE
"Lest we Forget"

It is unfortunate that on some operations people will be lost. Only one person that I am aware of passed away during the mission

VALE -  Lance Corporal Shawn Lewis, 145 Signal Squadron (RAEME)
Drowned at LST Loloho - 20 May 2000

Unfortunately I have no photos of LCPL Lewis but apparently he and a mate were trying out their new dive watches. They were jumping off the dolphins (jetties) at LST Loloho and trying to see who could stay under the longest. LCPL Lewis unfortunately won as he did not come back up.

Military divers from Australia and all members of PMG were tasked to look for his body. The foreshores of the port of Loloho were searched on foot while divers searched the waters.

The local "puri puri" (magic) man told of a large octopus that inhabitied the port and that it would have dragged his body down and hid it in the mud. The divers had already searched the area where he believed the body was hidden. Divers decided to humour the "magic man" and checked that area again. Amazingly his body was found on the bottom with just a small part of his googles showing through the mud

Please if anyone has photos or more information please contact me as I would like to setup a proper memorial to this soldier.
